Chastening, Pruning, and Humbling

September 22, 2010

Last Wednesday night we began a new series entitled Chastening, Pruning, and Humbling. I believe that God uses these three ways (and others) to conform us to the image of Christ. God wants us to look like Jesus Christ in character. Below is the first outline and notes that I give to those who come to the studies. Obviously there are a lot of things I say to fill in the gaps. The best way to get the full teaching is to be there! Prayer is also a integral part of  our Wednesday night meetings.

Conformed to the Image of Christ

… He also predestined [us]to be conformed to the image of His Son…Romans 8:29

After a person comes to faith in Christ, God continually works to conform them to the image of His Son Jesus Christ. Romans 12:2; Phil. 3:10, 21. The following are three of the many ways by which God accomplishes this:

I.  Chastening              Hebrews 12:1-11

† Chastening shows love v6

† Chastening confirms sonship v6

† Chastening develops respect v9

† Chastening brings fruit v11

II.  Pruning                John 15:1-2

† Pruning increases fruit bearing v2

† Fruitbearing brings glory to God v8

III. Humbling           James 4:6-10; 1Pet. 5:5-10

† God humbles us to teach us and test us Deut 8:3,16

† Humbling ourselves averts God’s wrath 2Chron. 32:26, 34:27

† Humility opens the way for salvation Ps. 18:27

† God guides and teaches the humble Ps. 25:9

† Humility leads to exaltation Mat. 23:12; Luke 14:11

† God opposes pride James 4:6; 1Peter 5:5

† Pride is the Devil’s sin 1Tim 3:6

† Pride causes strife Prov. 28:25

† Proud people are impatient Ecc. 7:8

“One of the greatest sources of joy and endurance for the

Christian is knowing that in the imperfection of our progress we

have already been perfected…” John Piper

For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. Hebrews 10:14
