Eastwood International Church

August 29, 2011

The Eastwood International Church is a new work partially funded by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma (BGCO) to reach out to people who speak languages other than English. The goal is to establish a self supporting church that can actively reach out to people from Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist backgrounds. These people are not being reached by our conventional ministries but they are loved by the Lord.

This new effort is led by Dr. Hagin Haokip and Dr. Kaitinkap (Kap)Vaiphei. These men along with other volunteers from Eastwood and the Asian community are working together to share Christ with those who don’t know Him. Both Hagin and Kap came to the U.S. to further their studies at ORU. They both received the Dr. degrees in Christian ministry. Kap is planning to return to India and resume his position as a teacher in a Christian School.

This is not an easy task to say the least. There are over 1,600 languages spoken in India alone. On 11th street where Eastwood is located we have met people who speak Hindi, Gujarati, and Bangla. In the first service the following languages were represented: Kuki, Burmese, Gujarati, Nepalese, Farsi, and Spanish. Fortunately English is also spoken as a second language, but if it is not their heart language then spiritual concepts are often lost in translation.

Each month on the second and last Sunday the International Church meets for worship. They also have small group meetings in homes. Hagin really has a heart for his people and is active in helping meet physical needs and resettle them here in Tulsa when they come from other states and countries of the world. Ladies from our church are volunteering to teach English to some Burmese families each Friday. This ministry is led by Shirley Ward, Shirley Lear, Jan Easley and Julia Small and others.

I am thankful for a Church that has a heart to reach the world for Christ one person at a time. Our vision for this is taken from Revelation 5:9

And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.

Please pray for this new mission effort. The International Church would love for you to join them in one of their worship services!
